Final Reading Blog "Brave New World"

-How does the whipping's and the hanging of John show the negative affects of totalitarian regime?

With Huxley having John whip himself and even commit scuicide, has a big impact on the view of mine and others about totalitarian. John seemed pure of heart and peaceful compared to the people of the One State. But it didn't take long for the negative affects of One State's beliefs to change John. I think by having John's mindset of life be completely altered by the One State shows just how much totalitarian government can change a person. And by dispaying such a gruesome affect, with John's scuicide, shows the negative affects of that government style.
-Why is it that it takes an abnormality for one to notice how bad of a world one lives in?
In Brave New World, Bernard and John are basically the only people that can see through the One State's scheme. Why is it that only these two can see through this haze that covers everyone? These are the two people that are considered different in this society, Bernard with the alcohol stunting his physical appearance and John with his shakespearan culture affecting his view on life. With these abnormalities, they are able to see all the wrong's in this society. I think because these people are different, they are treated differently from the rest of the citizens. And because they are treated differently they view life differently than others, and they think more about their life. Because they think more, they in turn think about their state more, which allows them to see all their flaws and see all the evils in that society.
-Why do you think that Huxley wrote about the failures of a Utopia?
I think that Huxley decided to write negatively about a Utopia because he wanted the public to almost be afraid of a Utopian concept. In Brave New World, the people were blind to the ways of the One State, and couldn't see their fake essence of happiness. I think by writing about that, he was pushing people away from concepts of Utopia by writing about the thought of a Utopia, when in turn it was really a distopia. I also think that he avhieved his goal of frightening others about a Utopia, because back then, losing individuality was a widely held belief. And with Huxley showing this future society with almost no individuality due to the births from machines, brought fear into the eyes of many about Utopia's.

"Do You Want Me" by the Human League

1. Te subject is a five year relationship, and the events within it, and lastly their break up.

2.The man is saying that with and only with his help, he turned her life in a better direction, "I picked you up and turned you around". With his help her life is full of success and happiness. But the woman is saying that she would've moved on with or without his help, "I'd find a much better place without you anyways". She believes that she was already planning on moving on to bigger and better things by herself.

3. I am on the man's side for this one because she was not working at agreat job, but once she met this man her life was turned upside down and was filled with prosperity and wealth due to him. Also she said she planned on moving on, but you don't just randomly get a great career will be placed in your lap. I feel like he was cheated in this relationship.

A Brave New World Reading Blog #2

Will John ever conform to the One-State as the rest of the people have?
I do not believe that John will ever conform to this society because of the variety of cultures he was born into and has learned about, the culture's of the reservation, the one state, and his Shakespearean. The most dominant of these three would be that of Shakespear's, Jonhn is an avid reader of his literature, and has taken to heart his saying's and beliefs. When John leaves the reservation with Bernard, and is actually immersed into the One-States way of life, I think it deepened his love for literature and increased his much dislike to this bizarre society."Oh Brave new World that has such people in it"(Shakespear 166).John says this aw=s a way to describe his distate of what has become of this society. As he goes throughout One-State, he is disgusted by seeing all the twins being made in the factory, he is upset with Lenina's sex life, and Helmholtz laughter of the thought of parents. "I don't believe this is right"(161). John exclaims this as the doctor proposes the thought of his mother taking soma, just another way he views the actions of the caste differently. This just help's to show John's kind and sincere heart, which is why I think he will never conform to this societies ways.

What would it take for someone to take down the One-State?
I think that it could be possible for one or many people to destroy the One State, the only problem with it is doing without creating suscpisions upon yourself. I believe the perfect candidate for this job would be either John or Bernard, because they would have an incentive or motive to want to rebel, they are the outcasts the oddballs of society."But his reputation...He spends most of his time by himself. ALONE."(57). Bernard is thought of differently, which makes a great candidate for rebellion. With this motivation, I feel like they could muster up a way to overthrow one-state."And this is the hypnopaedic control room...You slip the roll in here"(169) And I think the best way to do this is to use it's own strength against it, hypnopaedia. If they could possibly eternally alter all the slogans and writings being spoken through the hypnopaedia process, they could possibly change the opinions of One-States residents to turn on One-State itself. Yes this would be a vary long process since it takes many nights to get this opinion implanted, but it could bring down One-State.

What would happen if the people couldn't retrieve soma, or if it somehow ran out?
I know that the caste members recieve soma from places such as work, but how does it get from the plant to the people? What if the "caravans" of this drug suddenly couldn't retrieve or transport it to the people."What you need is a gramme of soma"(66).Henry Foster offers this to Bernard because he is looking very gloomy. Soma is primarily the basis of happiness or emotional security in this nation, and if this were to occur, then the people would come out from the fog they've been in for their whole lives and realize what type of "utopia" they've really been living in. I think the people would recognize how topsy turny their society they once thought perfect really is. They would possibly go back to the old ways of life through the help of people like John, who understand the true nature of happiness.

Brave New World Reading Blog #1

The World State would most definatley be a dystopia because they have so many restrictions on social behaviors to give the thought of happiness. They almost completely destroty the people's personality and individuality due to predetermined lifestyles and replacing human births with that of machines, which creates identical people.  They also destroy people's opinions to other religions, bibles and literature are no more, they are now all replaced with "T's" for Henry Ford's model T. By taking away the citizens individuality and social abilities, this society would be considered a dystopia.

1.) The world state has created equality and conformity in many ways, one way in which they create equality is by the seperation of people into the five different caste systems. These caste systems are made not by humans but human products in the incubators, then when these fertilized eggs are born, they are seperated into their predetermined caste system, either alpha, beta gama, delta and epsilon." So there they are predtermining someones entire life. They also do operant conditioning and  hypnopaedia so that these certain classes like certain things and meet their desired response level. And lastly, with the creation of Soma, they want everyone to basically live forever."And now we proceed to rub in the lesson with mild electric shocks"(Huxley page 34). They use electric shocks on the Delta infants to condition them to be afraid of books and nature so that they will not interfere with the order of caste beliefs. With these methods, the World State is controlling the entire society by trying to make everyone equal.

2.) The World State has greatly reduced conflict with things such as civil rights, by taking out parenthood or human births, they have greatly lowered the tender and loving relationships in humans. They also lower relationships with sex orgy's with community workers. "96 identical twins for 96 identical machines" (Huxley page 21). This is just another way in which they take away from someone's individuality. Now modern day religions are considered as corrupting and fake history, replacing the cross is the T symbol.

3.)This society has created happiness and conformity is through hypnopaedia phrases that make people feel happiness no matter their class rank."Yes, everyone is happy now"(Huxley page 86).Lenina says this as she recalls hearing it many times in her sleep, a hypnopaedia phrase to institute the feeling oh happiness. They also institue happiness through the perfect life of the people and the easy sex that comes with it. These people feel perfect in everyway which makes them extremely happy. One way that every adult in that society has conformed is behavior in public. Every adult is afraid if they will behave abnormally in public or at work, so therefore they have conformed to the "normal" behaviors through the eyes of the World State.

Variety of Perspectives

1. Having an emic perspective is beneficial because you get all the background information on the subject, you understand the purpose for the event and what it means to your culture. It helps to have an etic perspective because it helps you compare it to other cultures, and helps explains certain events within the culture. I think these two perspectives are important because they help to truly understand the nature of one's culture from a variety of views and opinnions.

2. These rules exist so that people understand what the ethnographer is doing in his observation, so you know the true facts about that culture, and so that the ethnographer doesn't show any bias in viewing the culture.

East vs. West

1. The west views the east as "others" who are inferior to their own, and are a lazy group of people.

2.When it says the west often views the east as homogenously, it means that they are very collectivist, dependent upon others, and can't think for themselves.

3.Easterners emotions and reactions are determined by racial considerations, and their actions are determined by instinctive emotions such as lust, terror, and fury.

4. The view of the east benefits the west because it pushes them to greater lengths to do better, so they aren't considered inferior as well. It is also a major morale booster.

5.I think this view still exist today, but not as strongly. The westerners are still to proud of themselves and just think higher of themselves.

Reading Blog #3 1984

Do you feel like Big Brother has won? Why or Why not?

-I actually feel like big brother has won this battle because if they can convince one of the biggest opponents to the party to love and believe everything that they say, is a huge victory. Winston was always protesting Big Brother, from committing thought crime, writing the diary, and have sex with Julia, he was always objecting the party's way of life."Winstonpushed the memory out of his mind,it was a false memory" (Orwell page 243). Winston finally admits that everything he had learned in the past that was bad about big brother, was a lie or a messup of the  brain. Through their means of torture, Winston finally cracked and now has faith and trust in everything Big Brother says and does, he is considered to be cured now.

What is one way that Big Brother can be thrown down?

-I think that the only way to overthrow big Brother is what Winston thought of, use the proles."If there is hope it lies in the proles" (Orwell page 60). These group of people have many more numbers of people than big brother, they could easily form together and take them down. Since the thought police, and other forms of spying don't spend so much time on the proles, they could easily find others that oppose Big Brother and finally take him down. The only problem with this solution, is that the proles don't have a leader or the right minds to put this plan together. Once they get past all the intellectual stuff, they could use their sheer numbers to overthrow the party.

What do you think happens to Winston at the end of the novel?

-I think that Winston will go out and purposely go against Big Brother and his ways just say he can be killed, "The long hoped for bullet entering my brain" (Orwell page 245). Winston was filled with joy after hearing the news of victory, and in that same time he realized his victory over himself and his new found love for the party, which he is now illing to die for. So I am predicting he will try to protest the party so he can die for it.

"Love Language" clip

1.) I assumed that the woman was deaf and that the man and woman had feelings for eachother.

2.)This would be a culturalconflict because being deaf is in fact a sub-culture for communication, and since she can't hear and he can it becomes a conflict.

3.) The external conflict in the videoould be the inability for the couple to communicate vocally with eachother.

4.)An inernal conflict would be the fact that he doesn't have enough courage or swagga to talk to the asian girl.

5.) The conflict of communication is resolved by the two people expressing their words and feelings down on sticky notes.

" This Land is my Land" by Woodie Guthrie

-Guthrie's message can be seen as both individualistic and collectivist in this song because it ties into both views. His message could be interpreted as collectivist because the song says " this land is for you and me", so this society would include everyone into that group. It could also be perceived as individualist because when he says that he's on this road alone, and the sighn says no tresspassing, the song is implying that he's on his own and people are being excluded from some of this land.

-This song would be anti-government because in the song he travels past the sign saying " No Tresspassing" and says that "no one can stop me". I tend to perceive this as anti-government because he is rebelling by crossing the sign and by not following all the laws.

1984- Reading Blog #2

Why is Winston having trouble buying into Big Brother and what the State are selling?
-Winston is having trouble in believing in what the state and Big Brother are telling him because he knows and realizes all the lies that he and others are being told. His job is a key factor of this, everyday he is being commanded to alter the past events to make Big Brother and the state seem perfect in every aspect. For example, when he changes speeches, records and even enemies Air Strip one has had for years, he is making them seem correct in every single sense.Because of this realization, it leads Winston to think about other things that the party is and is not truthfully telling him. It leads him to question every aspect of the party, until Hate comes around. Overall, due to all the lies being told, Winston is starting to question Big Brother and The state.

Are his small acts of defiance a form of protest? Why or Why not?
-I would say yes, that his little acts are in fact a form of protest because he is going against the laws and standards of Big Brother. Like when he and Julia began their secret love affair, he is rebelling against the party's dissproval of sexual pleasures. Or having secret meetings with O'brien where he openly trashes Big Brother, all of these events are rebellious acts. Although these might be very small forms of protest, the mindset behind it all is very big and potential for the overthrow of the state as well as Big Brother.

Compare/contrast Winston's small rebellion to a more current act of rebellion within the United States? What are they fighting for, who they are rebelling against, the way their protests seen by the government, the way their protests are seen by the masses?
-In the United States today, the tea party movement has quickly spread across America in hopes of owering our national debt, adhering to the constitution, reduce government spending, and oppose taxation in some ways. They do not have a central leader but rather are made up of small local groups. This is similiar to Winston's small rebellion because in both cases these rebellion are not very organized and are made up of dispersed people across the nation, and both are trying to make the government and politics go back to their original form to better their economy, politics and overall government. However they do vary in a couple cases, for instance: Winston's rebellion is all done in secrecy and can only meet in extremely private areas, whereas the tea party is an open group that disagrees with the government and can meet in any place and any time. Also, the tea party members do not have to worry about their lives being threatened, unlike Winstons rebellion which is constantly "looking over their shoulder". Finally, the tea party movement is accepted and considered with many debates by the government and common person, but in Winston's rebellion they don't acknowledge this opposing mass of people, but rather just blame one person (Goldstein) for all their problems.

The Egg Conflict Questions

1.)The conflict would be an external one because the father doesn't have the physical capability and right attitude to correctly entertain his customers. Instead of entertaning them he tends to scare them, "There was a half insane light in his eyes as he stared glaring" (Anderson 6). You can't properly entertain someone if you are creeping them out. But because he doesn't have a choice at this, it would be external.

2.) The chicken would represent the boy's parents and the eggs symbolize all the new innovations, ideas and ambitions they propose. "It was fathers idea to entertain the people in the restaraunt" (Anderson 5). This is just one example of a new idea that they came up with to better their business and lifestyle.

3.)I believe that he says these things because like he said in the story, "Some chickens must go through a dreadful lifestyle" and "On a chicken farm death was a dialy visitor" (Anderson 2 and 5). This explains his dark and gloomy mood because he was always surrounded by death. Both he and philosophers know about the aspects of life and all the events that come in it.

4.)One time I was deciding on whether to buy a new movie or a new nerf gun, both of which cost $20 and all I had was $20. I ended up buying the nerf hun because I felt like I could have nerf wars and more fun with it. This would be an internal conflict because I had two decisions that would affect me.

Aristotle's Messsage

I agree with Aristotle's message because I believe that only ignorant people would accept every concept thrown at them, because they can't decipher between the facts, and important information. Because they can't do this they accept every theory, making them ignorant. Therefore I agree with Aristotle's message because you can see intelligence by the persons ability to understand a concept and deny it at the same time.

American Friendships

1.) Some reasons that Americans can be perceived as superficial friends are the fact that we tend to be more independent; we don't like to rely on others because it shows weakness; we don't ask for favors often because we feel obligated to perform assistance in the future; and Americans have very busy lifestyles. Because of these reasons Americans can't and choose not to spend as much quality time with other people and therefore we seem as superficial friends to other cultures.

Individualistic Movie

1.) Some ideal personality traits for an individualistic culture would be selfishness, dependent, smart, and creative, Some traits for a collectivist culture would be modest, reliable, communicator and friendly.

2.)I think this is true for an individualistic culture because collectivist would work more as a group and listen to everyones opinion whereas in an individualist culture you would just have your own opinion to build upon.

3.)If a teacher from an individualist culture acknowledges Quan for getting the highest score on the test even though everyone else did really weell, some parents and even kids might be angered because the teacher would not be acknowledging everyones great scores.

4.)An aquantice is someone who you are familiar, but not close enough to be called a friend. I would say this word has a negative connotation because that person isn't close enough to be considered a friend.

"2+2=5" by Radiohead

-This song is literally talking about the misconceptions and lies that are being told to the people and that these people need to open their eyes to these false truths.

-The music helps push the message of this song because the tempo of the song is constantly changing just like the facts the people are being told.

-The title of this song is an illusion to 1984 because both the title and Big Brother's concepts are little lies that are constantly being told to the people so they will not rise up against the party leaders.

Conflicts: Globalization Video

1.) different opinions in customs, appearance, and preferances across a global community, or the different ways that we view the world.. This would be an external conflict because it deals with opposing values across a global community.

2.) Globalization creates conflict through our variety of different opinions on culture and traditions. Globalization is said to flow in one direction, this means that westerners think everyone wants to be just like them, but we don't want to be like anyone else.

3.)One benefit to globalization is that it helps open opportunities for role models to be formed. and role models help people aspire to their full potential.

4.)two scources that both muslims and westerners abide by are their religous beliefs as well as the laws of their society.

First Reading Blog: 1984

What do Utopia's all have in common?
-I believe that all utopias have a couple things in common, first: they all give off the appearance of happiness, and perfection within a society when there really isn't one, they try to eliminate anything to do with individuality such as religion and partnerships, and lastly they try to make everyone equal.

How has 1984 created equality or conformity?
-In George Orwell's book 1984, the society Air Strip one, is full of many ideas that lead to conformity and the thought of equality. For instance, many people conform to all of the unjust rules and punishments that are carried out through the government "Big Brother". This ruling class is mistreating and unjust to every citizen in Airstrip One, but few can see all of it's flaws Like Winston can. This regime is taking out their previous history in the Ministry of Truth location. Many people think this is completely wrong, to change one's history just to please the ruling class. They are conforming to this horrible act because they are afraid of being sentenced to death like so many previous workers before them. Also they have tried to create equality through what the different classes wear. All workers in political parties must wear a certain type of overall to clarify their occupation.

How have they reduced conflict in individualistic rights?
-Airstrip one has almost completely deystroyed their citizens rights in many ways. First, in almost every corner there is a telescreen that watches and records every movement and sound a citizen will make in their lifetime. This is definatley taking away the concept of privacy. Also they have almost taken out sex, and profanity altogether. It is not fully illegal to have sex, but it is very much looked down upon. Here again they are taking away the individuals right to love one another. Another way is that they have taken out the thought of religions. People cannot freely express their beliefs and praises without being criticized or even killed.

How have they created a forced Happiness?
-In this society, they want everyone to feel happy and that everything is alright, and they succeed in doing this by constantly lying to them. In the book, the food supplies there is slowly dwindling, but "Big Brother" keeps reassuring them that they just got in a new shipment of food, or that they have never had more food then they do right now. But only few actually realize that this is completely false. Also in the Ministry of Truth, where Winston works, he is always seeing cases in history that he must alter so that the people only see positive things, rather than the less satisfying news.

Is this society a Utopia or Distopia?
-I would say that Airstrip one is most definately a distopian society because it gives off the appearance of a utopia, but is unquestionably not perfect in anyway. distopian societies typically have various forms of social control systems, and that is exactly the case in 1984. This society has the thoughtpolice, double think, Big Brother, and Newspeak which are all ways of trying to control social behaviors. Because of this reasoning, you can conclude that this society is in fact a distopia.

Utopian Society

-A utopia is a perfect society with the belief of equality and happiness throughout the community.

-My ideal world would be on a world where the crust was made out of a variety of cookies and brownies. It had fields of cupcakes and sweets, rivers of chocolate syrup, and lakes filled with never-melting ice cream. The population of my society would consist of my family members, friends, and the dallas cowboy cheerleaders. We would have mo money or political system, we would have no worries in the world. Life would be one big party, similiar to Jersey Shore.

-The type of music that would be the soundtrack to my life would be radio disney, Britney Spears, and The Party Rock Anthem.

"You Were Right" by Built To Spill

-I believe that this song is about breaking up or putting a close to a relationship. You can assume this is true whe he says "we are just dust in the wind" and "this is the end".

-When the music's tempo builds up, as well as the guitar getting louder and faster, it relates to his frustartion and anger towards his girlfriend.

-I think this song is good because it was very creatively written because it included bits and pieces of other songs, and the beat went perfectly to the words in the song.

-The words in the song lead us to believe that he is going through a rough patch in his life or possibly depression, and we conclude this when he says "You were wrong when you said Everything is gonna be alright" and "It's a hard rain's gonna fall".

Reading Critically Packet

There are many ways in which one can deeply improve one's ability to be a master reading critique, and to get there all you must do is follow these upcoming rules. One of the most important things to remember while reading or writing, is to look beneath the writer's words and to see their intentions and understand them. When first perfecting your reading critique, you must first look at the writing piece before reading it, to help you better understand what the essay will be about. You can do this by looking at the title, background information of the author, and the time and place of its creation. Next you must learn how to annotate, or take notes about the writings information; by doing this, it will be easier for you to reconstruct the essay's key points. In turn, this will help you to summarize all the important content within the essay; which will eventually help you understand the author's meaning of the writing. But to better comprehend the meaning, you require the techniques on how to analyze the essay, draw conclusions about it, connect the piece as a whole, and evaluate its work quality. With these special techniques and rules, you can better decipher the author's true meaning and purpose of the essay. If you can complete this series of steps, you will correctly master the reading process.

"Young Life" By Bo Barlett

My three claims for this painting are the following: the man and women are in an intimate relationship, the small stick resembles the boy's oppinion towards th enviroment, and the son is different than his father. We can conclude that their in a relationship because they are in a very strong embrace, the stick represents his view on the enviroment, because he is supporting the stick up, we can assume he supports an enviromentalist view, and because he is seperated from his father and because they have different clothing, we can assume they are different in many ways.

Academic voice: In Bo Barlett's painting " Young Life", we can conclude that the father and son are two extremely different people. You can percieve this true, .by their contrast in clothing, and their physical seperation. The father is portrayed  in very relaxed clothing with an unbutton shirt and backwards hat on, whereas the child is in proper clothing, including a collared shirt with a sweater over top of it. Also in the painting there is a huge seperation between these two people, with the child's back to the man. Because of their different opinions in style and their lack of interest in eachother, we can assume that these two people vary in many ways.

"Shame"

This song is about having regret.

I thought the tone was regretfel or full of remorse. Three words that helped me get this tone was promise, sorry and boatloads. Promise decribes his tone because he is saying how he swears he will change to meet her needs, sorry because he feels bad for the way things ended in their last meeting, and he is ashamed of it so he's saying he is sorry. And finally boatloads because it is more of a drastic word, to describe the shame he feels, and he wants her to know how upset he is about it.

"Batting Cleanup and Striking Out" SOAPSTONE

Subject-The subject of Dave Barry’s “Batting Cleanup and Striking Out” is that men and women are very different on attitudes and opinions. Male and female uniqueness is illustrated with the author’s examples of cleanliness and athletics. He is saying how different we truly are by saying that women look more into detail about things, rather than men. He joked about this by saying women can see dirt molecules, when men can’t see them until their large clumps. This saying shows how women are more concerned with the little things. And with the example of men wanting to watch a big sports game rather than engage in small talk, shows how men would prefer observing something entertaining, rather than indulging in petty talk, like women fancy.

Occasion-“Batting Cleanup and Striking Out” was written in 1988. The late 1980’s is illustrated through the writing piece by the examples of entertainment and technological advancements. The author says that in his free time he likes to play with his etch-a-sketch, which I would consider an older manufactured toy. Also when he says: “I can hear the World Series radio and TV broadcasts in my ears”, you can imply this is a time where people were costumed to radios rather television sets. The probable place of the essay’s creation is in New York. This is the place of creation because before the article given, it states that Dave Barry was a humorist in the New York Times. So we can assume that he lives there, therefore that’s where the book was created.

The time and Place of the essay’s creation influences the essay by the types of words and phrases used. When he says things like: God forbid, social gaffes, and the sound of the radio in my ears, these are all due to the word choice and technology in that time period. Therefore these phrases influence the content within this essay.

Audience-Dave Barry’s specific audience for “Batting Cleanup and Striking Out” is men and women in relationships. The author’s target audience is revealed by the two sexes constant comparison to each other and their opinions on everyday situations. When the author kept comparing men and women’s different attitudes towards certain events and occasions, it felt like he was giving reasons for why they act that way. So through him explaining why the opposite sex acts like that, he wants the sexes to read it to better understand one another.

The author’s general audience for this essay is every single man, woman, and child in the United States. The author’s general audience is expressed by him giving general information about the behaviors of wives, husbands, and parents. By him giving information about how American men and women behave in certain situations, it is beneficial for all citizens of the United States.

Purpose- Dave Barry’s purpose in “Batting Cleanup and Striking Out” is to inform, as well as entertain us on male and female behaviors. His enlightenment and amusement on this topic is revealed when he says the following: “the primary difference between men and women is that women can see extremely small quantities of dirt.” Obviously this isn’t proven, but he is entertaining and amusing us on the idea that women have better attention to detail, through a comical and informing phrase.

Speaker-Dave Barry, whom wrote humorist columns in the New York Times, believes that everyone should learn how to speak and write proper English. This value is illustrated through a job he had for eight year at a consulting firm. He went to business people to get them to stop writing improperly, thereby showing his passion for literature.
Dave Barry, who plays lead guitar in his Band “Rock Bottom Remainders”, shows his opinion on expressing oneself. He does this by writing multiple books and columns in papers, as well as creating music. All of these ways are great for expressing your voice and personality. Through his career choices as a writer and musician, you can see the importance of expression in his life.

Dave Barry’s expression is evident in this essay when he complains about his wife’s facial expressions when he doesn’t meet her standards. By him expressing his angry reaction to this movement, it helped enhance the purpose of informing us on the differences between the sexes, by showing their disagreements on certain issues.

Tone- Dave Barry exhibits a humorous and serious attitude about male and female differences in “Batting Cleanup and Striking Out”. These attitudes are expressed by his use of comedy to explain serious issues between the sexes. when he says things like, the caring and sensitive guy I am, because of pompeii men do very little housework, and heavyweight racquetball champions from Iowa.., he is using humor and sarcasm to help get his point across. And by him being humorous with these serious topics, he is entertaining and amusing us with male and female differences.

"American Tongue's"

1. Voice in lietarature is the rythym and word choice that an author uses to express his personality.

2.One of my common sayings is "Oh, Okay". This is something that I always throw around hear and there when I'm asked to do soething silly. It is a very sarcastic comment, which is something I would definately say.

3.Everytime my favorite college team, the Virginia Tech Hokies, lose in a sporting event, I always try to talk around the situation because people are always mocking them. I typically avoid this by bringing up a completely different subject.

4.Voice's in essays help persuade people and it also helps entertain and keep the audience focused. Some things to avoid when writing academic essays are the following: run on sentences, boring voice, incorrect punctuation, first person, and slang.

5. Some ways we can develope our own voice is by using wise word choice and tones.

classic vs. metal vs. dubstep

I'm not sure what we had to do for this because I was absent, and it's not on the class website. So i'm going to write which one was more pleasing to me, and which is more pleasing to the world.

-I found that the dubstep version was more enjoyable to listen to because it was more energetic and upbeat, making me actually interested in it. I feel like adding all of the background music made the song more pleasurable to listen to because you were listening to that and the lyrics, rather than just the lyrics.

-I feel like the population as a whole would like the original Beatles song more than the metal and dubstep version because people like the original soft melody more than the energetic dubstep, and obnoxious metal. Also the lyrics were easily understood, making it a song that people can actually sing and hum too. Also people shouldn't mess with originals, especially not the beatles. Because the song was softer and smoother, I feel like the general public would find it more pleasurable then the metal, and dubstep version

Kandinsky vs. Pollack

-I personally liked Kandinsky's better because he used more vibraqnt and exuberent colors that appealed to me, with the random placement of the geometric shapes it made you look at the whole painting. Allowing you to see something new every single time.

-I feel like Pollack's is more pleasing to everyone as a whole because it has more depth, the colors were nicely blended and monochromatic, color was rich rather than fading, and it doesn't make you think it just absorbs you into it's mesmirizing colors.

Sign Language Journal

-The single effect of this short clip was to get people to go out into the world, and have a positive feeling towards life and all the little things in it.

-The man holding the sign had a very dreary job, but he made it positive by saying and doing these things: London is the most exciting place in the world, and my job puts me right in the middle of it, there is so much community and life around me, and his job allowed him to make new friends and meet a special girl.

-If you changed the tone in which the character talked, the effect would've been completely different. He had such a positive and uplifting tone, that if he didn't say things with it, the effect would've been changed.

SOAPSTONE "Shooting an Elephant"

A-George Orwell's specific audience for Shooting an Elephant was most likely people in Europe. The author's target audience is revealed by him saying that there were several thousands of them in the town and none of them seemed to have anything to do except stand on street corners and jeer at Europeans. By him saying this, he is telling the european population of how these burmese feel towards them and their ways.
The author's general audience for Shooting an Elephant is anyone who has ever come by a form of peer pressure or conformity. The author's general audience is exhibited when he says I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool. By Orwell saying this, he is implying he only did this task to avoid being made fun of, and thereby falling under conformity.

P-George Orwell's purpose in Shooting an Elephant is to inform us about the power of a crowd and the social pressures that come with it. This peer pressure is illustrated when he says the following: The people expected it of me and I had got to do it. Because he felt that the Burmese were forcing the murder upon him, he thought if he didn't go through with the murder they would jeer and mock him for the rest of his life.

S-George Orwell, an English writer, believes that there is much social injustice in our world. This value is illustrated by his ridicule of imperialism because it oppresses the Burmese people. This helps explain the moral of his essay and how the murder of the elephant, and oppression of people was unjust. This helps the essay's purpose to inform us of how social pressures can create injustices in our world.

T-George Orwell shows a strong and sturdy attitude about comformity in Shooting an Elephant. These attitudes are expressed by saying that he  did not in the least want to shoot him, but they were so forceful. By implying that th groups pressure was so strong on his actions, he too is having a sturdy tone with their pressures.

SOAPSTONE of "Shooting an Elephant"

S- The subject of George Orwell's Shooting an Elephant is that one will act differntly to certain pressure's just so one will not be mocked or jeered at. This peer pressure is illustrated by this following sentence: To come all that way, rifle in hand, with two thousand people marching at my heels, and then to trail feebly away, having done nothing — no, that was impossible. The crowd would laugh at me. This is at the point, where he believes that the Elephant doesn't need to be killed, but since he created all the hype for the murder by fetching for the rifle, he feels that he must murder it for fear of being made fun of.
O-Shooting an Elephant was written during the 1920's to 1930's. The essay's time of creation is exhibited by the following: wretched prisoners huddling in the stinking cages of the lock-ups, , the scarred buttocks of the men who had been flogged with bamboos. These are very old imprisonments and punishment ways, which help gave me the idea that this was around the 1920's to 1930's. The probable place of the essay's creation is somewhere in England. In Moulmein, in Lower Burma... This is where he desribes his urroundings, which is located in the country of England.
The time and place of the essay's creation influences the essay in the way of what was happening in poor countries in that time, weapon power, and the people's behavior. The  Burmese were being oppressed by British, and the elephant would have died quicker if their was a more powerful rifle. Also ff a European woman went through the bazaars alone somebody would probably spit betel juice over her dress, this describes how the people act. Thereforew these behaviors, oppressions, and technology affect the essay due to their time in history.

" Good Old Desk" by Harry Nelson

S-God is always there for him
O-In the 1970's, in America
A-Listeners to religous music
P-to entertain us with song, and possibly inform us about God
S-Harry Nelson
T-comforting

He is literally talking about his old desk and how he depended on it, but he has a deeper meaning in his song towards his religous beliefs of God. He is using his desk to symbolize God and his relationship with him, he gives evidence of this in his title Good Old Desk or GOD, and text in the song like the following: I've never seen it tease, it's always there to please.

" The Runaway" by Rockwell

In the Painting "The Runaway, Rockwell's painting shows a young boy, who is apparently running away, and seems to be having a very comfortable conversation with a police officer and counter waiter. This painting, which was done in the 1950's, seems to be a perfect little photogragh, showing America as a very nice and friendly country. Wheras in retrospect, the 1950's was a time of turmoil and counter culture. So this painting is showing all of the good things about America to make it seem perfect, but is purposely leaving out the bad. Therefore this painting is overlooking the fundamental rift that..........

"Across the Universe" by The Beatles

Three images that were in the song was rain in a paper cup, shards of broken light, and a million suns shinning.

I thought the paper cup filled with rain was a symbol for all of your sadness filling up inside os your body, and that a million suns shining was one's transformation to happiness or to a new begining.

A good symbol would be a white flag, representing surrnder or acceptance of defeat. This is because white stands for peace and purity, so when one raises a white flag, it shows peace or surrender, and because over times armies have done this action to show that they give up.

"Inspiration Information" by Shuggie Otis (1974)

I felt like this song was very upbeat and funkalishis.

I thought the variety and harmony of all the instruments gave the song a very unique beat and sound, giving it that funkt vibe. All of the sounds blended so well, kind of like a fruit smoothie, they are both perfectly blended.

I thught the musicians choice of blending insruments, using soft vocals, and the sound from the electric guitar and keyboard gave the song that soft, yet funky sound.

"Semeadores" by Diego Rivera

S-struggle over labor
O-1950's- 1960's
A-Those in Mexico in Favor of Capitalism, or those for communism
P-to persuade people against capitalism
S-Diego Rivera, a painter
T- Sympathetic

I thought that Diego Rivera was trying to say how strenuous and hard life can be, and how sometimes you have to "bend over backwards" to get stuff done and perservere. I thought he backed this up by using all black to represent the sky, to show the dark times they were in. The position of the worker leaning over on the shovel, showing how hard the work is. By using certain colors and positioning, it helped express his theme better.

Song Writing Journal

Wilco's main approach to creating a song is by forming the song as aw hole to hear how it sounds, he then deconstructs the song piece by piece and instrument by instrument. He then continues to perfect these little subparts by either adding or taking stuff out.

When I first begin a writing assignment I make a list of everything I have to incorporate into the writing, from there I make an outline with those topics. When I'm done with that, I start to put my paper into paragraph form. I then Edit my entire paper, and write my final draft from that point.

Listening Journal: 2

-I think nostalgia is where one has a longing or yearning for something in their past that made them happy.

-When I heard this song, I saw many things fly into my mind, but the first was a scene similiar Grease Lightning. I saw a bunch of highschoolers in a dinner, similiar to Steak and Shake, and they were all sipping on milkshakes, dancing, laughing and just having a great time.

-When I think of my childhhod many memories flood into my head, but the best are the following: My barney doll, pokemon cards, my dogs Bailey and Beamer, Teeball, playing house, family movie nights, pre-school, living in tornado alley, being rocked and sung to, macaroni. and riding a bike.

Art Journal Log

-Some of the determining factors for why people are in poverty are the following: Substance abuse, mental health, single parents, poor education, large families, as well as piled up debt from previous generations.
-I also believed that this artist portrayed poverty as a very negative effect by using dark and dreary colors, and giving the people dreary faces.
-I believe that his message was that when In poverty, everyday is a constant struggle to survive, from starvation to natural effects like temperture. And no matter who you are, poverty can easily affect you.
-Two art styles that the artist used to enhance his message were dreary colors, and the positioning of the people. By using all of these dark colors, it corresponded with the dark times that the family was facing, and by positioning the people next to iron bars, it resembeled jail bars and how poverty imprisons so many people.

Live Free and Starve vs. The Singer Solution to World Poverty

Chitra Divakuruni and Peter Singer have completely different views, when it comes to aiding third world countries. In Live Free and Starve, by Chitra, she was proposing the USA helps poor and starving families in these countries, by buying consumer goods from factories, where there are indentured kids. By giving that company more productivity, we are giving those kids an oppurtunity to make more money and prevent themselves from starvation. Whereas Singer in The Singer Solution to World Poverty, he says that instead of buying luxuries as in cruises and fancy clothing, we should donate all that money to save kids all around the world from starvation. I personally do not completely fancy both concepts. I do want to help all these starving kids, but by importing all of these goods, we are also hurting our economy and putting my own future kids in their same position. And singer said, "An American Household annually spends $30,000 dollars only on necessities, and the rest should be donated to poor families" I disagree with Singer's view here because if every family donated all of their annual money, except for the $30,000, then the poor people would become richer than everyone else. But I do agree, that everyone should pitch in and exleast try to donate the $200 to save one kids life a year. I think we could all wait a few more months for those new shoes, or that fancy car, and in turn spend that money to save a kid. I think I do have bias in these articles due to the culure I was raised up in. I didn't really agree with the first one because I'm always hearing people say how bad the economy is, and I don't really want to risk putting my future grandkids in the same position as those starving kids. And for Singer's proposition I like the idea of everyone chipping in money every year to save millions of kids, because I was always raised with the concept "It's better to give, than recieve." "If every citizen in affluentt nations contributed his or her share, I wouldn't have to make such a drastic sacrifice." This is exactly what I agree with, if everyone did his or her own share, millions of kids could be saved. Rather than one person sacrificing all of his or her own hard earned money for the sake of others.

Listening Journal: Round and Round

In this song we heard today, I said for my facts that their was a bass guitar, keyboard, drums and that the song had a slow steady beat. These facts barely, but did alter my opinion of the song, because I prefer a faster beat in a song. And this is where the bias part comes in, because I prefer listening to faster and more upbeat songs, I just labeled this song as boring and bland from the get-go, therefore I didn't really give the song my fullest attention.
